Community partnership helping young people access football in Chelmsford

Chelmsford City FC Community Foundation is proud to be working in partnership with Chelmsford Muslim Society (CMS) to create more opportunities for young people to enjoy football in a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment.

The collaboration began following an Essex Police Community Goals event, where both organisations connected through a shared aim of making grassroots football more accessible for young people who may otherwise face barriers to participation due to religious education commitments. With support from Essex County FA Club and Community Officer Jason Levy, the idea quickly developed into a practical community programme.

Launched in late 2025, the initiative now delivers weekly recreational football sessions every Monday evening in Chelmsford. The sessions have gone from strength to strength and currently support 23 young people aged between five and 16, providing structured coaching, positive role models and welcoming space to play and develop.

Delivered by experienced coaches from Chelmsford City FC Community Foundation, the programme focuses on environment, confidence building and skill development, while CME plays a vital role in engaging local families and ensuring the sessions meet the needs of the community.

Sarah Harris, Community Executive at Chelmsford FC Community Foundation, said: ‘We believe football should be accessible to everyone. This partnership with Chelmsford Muslim Society is a great example of how working closely with local communities allows us to remove barriers and create positive sporting opportunities for young people.’

Supported by Active Essex, the initiative provides young Muslims with a chance to access grassroots football in a setting that works around their faith and educational commitments, helping them stay active, build friendships and enjoy being part of a team.

The programme also forms part of the wider Essex Community Goals initiative, which uses football to strengthen community relationships and create positive pathways for young people. Thanks to the ongoing support of key partners and the commitment of everyone involved, the sessions continue to grow and make a meaningful difference across Chelmsford.
